YOUTH CONGRESS 2009 - - October 3rd!

The Douglas County Youth Congress is a program created and sponsored by the Douglas County Youth Initiative, in collaboration with I-Wake. The primary aim of the Youth Congress is to give YOU, the youth of Douglas County, a voice on issues that affect you and your families profoundly every day. Even though you can't vote yet, you've got a venue in which your voices can be heard. At the Douglas County Youth Congress, you and other involved teens will generate solutions to actual policy issues, leading to real change and improvement in your community.

The first Youth Congress was held on April 12, 2008. Ten students from each high school and alternative education program in the county were invited to participate and spent the day working with elected officials on four policy topics. In 2009, the program is being expanded to ensure that youth with a diversity of backgrounds and experiences are represented. Youth delegates range in age from 13 to 19 and can earn community service hours for high school graduation requirements or for other purposes.

Highlights include interacting with elected local and state-level officials, an inspirational presentation by the co-founder of PeaceJam, meeting other like-minded & involved teens, and making a real difference on important issues. Plus, food and takeaways!
